WEST BLACKHALL STREET TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES

As part of the Greenock Town Centre Regeneration Funding , Riverside Inverclyde and Inverclyde Council have been given funding to improve the safety of pedestrians along the length of West Blackhall Street. This will be of benefit to locals and visitors from the cruise liners accessing the town centre. In essence, it is the provision of four raised granite platform areas which will slow down vehicles at junctions and afford a greater priority to those on foot.

The contract for these works has been awarded to Landscape and Contracts at Hillington and the contracts manager for the company has had several meetings with the Council Roads Department and police to discuss the best way of implementing these changes.

It has been agreed amongst all concerned that , due to the various current orders and one way systems in place on West Blackhall Street, Nicolson Street, Laird Street and Argyle Street it is considered to be least disruptive to undertake the four granite road crossings in one operation, requiring only one temporary order to be in place for a duration of two weeks, allowing the contractor to get in and out quickly.

The alternative would have been four different temporary orders over a period of eight weeks with direction of traffic and road closures being changed every two weeks, which would have been a logistical nightmare on site with the various signage and for the general public and users of the town centre, not knowing what access would be available from week to week.

The simplified plan shows the proposed traffic management for the road crossings at West Blackhall Street.

This has all been agreed with the Police and Roads as being the most sensible approach. The contractor intends to be on site week commencing 2nd August to undertake preparations for the order, removing the existing islands, setting up site compound etc, to ensure that on Monday 9th August when the closure order comes into force they can implement the traffic management and get off to a flying start.
